The Cardano Foundation is working together with Scantrust to prevent the counterfeiting of goods. In a press release, the Cardano Foundation states that the conceived solution allows brand owners to use Scantrust’s physical, secure QR codes for targeted data features and traceability. The system provides fast and inexpensive tracing within the supply chain, powered by the Cardano blockchain.

This solution is not only theory, as practical tests are already ongoing in the real world. Currently, a proof-of-concept application is underway at Baia’s Wine, an artisanal wine producer from Georgia. This choice may seem a bit random, but Baia’s Wine is a renowned winemaker.

Baia’s Wines is a real family business, and they export to dozens of countries. Three generations of winemakers work in the company and are currently led by the sisters Abuladze, one of which made the coveted Forbes ’30 Under 30‘ list.

Through the collaboration, metadata from the Cardano blockchain application is combined with unique and traceable QR codes from Scantrust. This information is also integrated into Baia’s wine bottles before they enter the market. The application gives wine buyers access to clear and relevant data about their beverages.

Nathan Anderson, CEO of Scantrust, explains what this partnership can mean for brand owners. He says: ‘By leveraging Scantrust’s connected goods platform and seamless integration with Cardano’s transactional metadata, brand owners can offer consumers transparent, easy access. They hold the complete origin story of the product in their hands and increase confidence in what they buy. A significant additional advantage is the scalability of the Cardano Foundation’s metadata connector. By using the highly decentralized Cardano blockchain, you can do so without high costs.’

This application is the first time the metadata about transactions on the Cardano blockchain is used for commercial purposes.
